Hearing Aid Insurance Information

Most plans do not automatically cover hearing healthcare or hearing aids. Even if you have it, insurance coverage for hearing aids varies in the way it is administered. If you want to ask specific questions about the type of coverage you have, simply look at your insurance card to find a toll-free number for member services. Calling your insurance company is the best way to get the most accurate information about your coverage.

There is a wide variety of healthcare insurances and coverage options. Some are listed below with more information and helpful links.

Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) does not cover hearing aids.

However, Medicare-eligible beneficiaries may still have options for hearing coverage—either through a state Medicaid program (for those who receive Medicaid) or through a Medicare Advantage plan.

Medicaid could cover hearing aids, depending on your coverage and where you live. Click here to learn more about Medicaid programs offered state-by-state.

Medicare Advantage (also called Part C or MA) could cover hearing aids because plans vary by location, and benefits included also vary from plan to plan. To learn more about coverage in your area, you can search using the Medicare Plan Finder or call your local Medicare office.

Most Aetna benefit plans exclude coverage of hearing aids. Any applicable benefit plan exclusions and limitations for coverage of hearing aids would apply to air conduction hearing aids, implantable hearing aids and semi-implantable hearing aids. More information on Aetna hearing aid coverage.

Blue Cross/Blue Shield offers supplemental plans for hearing aid service benefits. These benefits are determined by state. They also have an additional plan called “Blue 365”, which offers additional benefits outside of regular plans. Learn more aboutBlue 365 hearing healthcare here.

Cigna is partnered with a hearing healthcare company named Amplifon to offer their customers a specific kind of coverage. If you have coverage through Cigna, you may be able to get additional coverage through their plan.Learn more of Cigna/Amplifon coverage here.

United Healthcare also partners with a hearing healthcare company. Health Innovations (a United Health company) is a separate group that covers all things hearing health and hearing aids. Please visit Health Innovations website to learn more.

Humana has partnered with TruHearing to offer an affordable hearing aid benefit to Medicare recipients (and this is Medicare beneficiaries in select states). The hearing aid benefit is offered on Humana Medicare Advantage HMO plans.

WellCare offers hearing healthcare benefits under their WellCare Value HMO plan. If you have the WellCare Value HMO plan, you can find a provider in your area by using this tool.

The TriWest Healthcare Alliance is contracted with the VA (the Department of Veteran Affairs) to offer their members hearing healthcare and hearing aids. All hearing aid devices will be ordered and procured through the VA, using devices that are currently on the VA Hearing Aid contract. Here is a quick reference guide that covers all regions.
